An Interview with Warwick Kay

1. When did you start illustrating and designing?

Professionally, I started in 2005, after I graduated from University, but I’ve been drawing since I was a little kid.

2. Why have you started illustrating children’s books?

I’ve always wanted to illustrate a children’s book, because I think it's an amazing platform for telling stories. I find the seamless combination of pictures and words really fascinating.

3. What is your favourite illustrated children’s book?

Hard to pick one. Perhaps 'Where The Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak.

3. What is the power behind a story?

I think imagination. Without imagination the world would be empty. Further, I think a good story can help foster a more imaginative spirit in people.

4. Where did the creative direction of Lucy and Mum’s Shoes originate from?

The author, Emily Child, wrote the story, so she had a rough idea of what Lucy should look and feel like. From there I went to the drawing board and came up with a look for Lucy and Neville the frog that would suit the spirit of the book. The rest flowed from there.
